Because of the extreme poverty of many of our patients, about 12% of our patient’s bills are never collected. This poverty also puts our doctors in difficult circumstances. Not only are they faced with patients who refuse care because of the costs it will incur, they also have to weigh the benefits versus the financial burden a given procedure will place on a patient and their family. Financial considerations also keep many of our poorest patients away until their illness as reached a critical point. |
