Three months ago Phiong came to the hospital with pain in her leg. Because of complications from diabetes the recommendation was for amputation. She refused because her Animistic/Buddhist beliefs taught her that if her leg was amputated she would not have a leg in heaven. She decided that she would rather die with her leg on. Over the next three months the leg began to rot and decay and caused her great pain. Finally she consulted a Buddhist priest who said that if she could retrieve her leg after it was amputated and place it in her coffin when she died she might not be missing a leg in heaven.
