You will need a visa to enter Indonesia. In order to obtain a visa your passport must be valid for at least 6 months from the time you intend to enter Indonesia. There are two basic types of visas:

Tourist Visas

  • Can be obtained at any Indonesian consulate, embassy or when clearing immigration at airports in the following Indonesian cities: Jakarta, Batam and Denpasar (Bali)
  • Are good for 30 days and cannot be renewed
  • Can be obtained without an official letter of sponsorship
  • Will allow you to observe the daily happenings around the hospital and provide assistance to the foreign missionaries in Serukam
  • Recommended for students and non-medical volunteers who are staying for less than 30 days

Social Visas

  • Can only be obtained at an Indonesian consulate or embassy  (You cannot get a social visa at the airport)
  • Are good for 30 days but can be renewed 5 times without leaving Indonesia
  • Can only be obtained with an official letter of sponsorship
  • Will allow you to act in an official capacity as a consultant/teacher and provide direct treatment to patients
  • Recommended for all medical professionals or volunteers who wish to stay longer than 30 days

Obtaining a Visa Prior to Departure

If you need a social visa (or are planning to enter Indonesia through an airport that does not give tourist visas) we recommend that you obtain a visa prior to your departure. In order for us to prepare an official letter of sponsorship we will need the following information from you:
  • Full name
  • Date of birth (day, month and year)
  • Place of birth
  • Passport number, date of issue and date of expiration
  • Sex
  • Marital status
  • Your profession
  • Location (city) of the Indonesian Consulate you will mail your passport to

We will need at least four weeks to prepare your letter of sponsorship and get it sent to you. If you have access to a fax machine, please include the fax number as this will streamline things a bit.

Once you receive your letter of sponsorship, you will need to mail this plus the following items to an Indonesian Consulate/Embassy:

  • A valid passport
  • Two copies of a completed visa application
  • 2 passport size photos
  • A copy of your itinerary or letter from travel agent confirming purchase of tickets to and from Indonesia
  • A certified copy of green card or stay permit (for non US citizens)
  • A letter from the place you work indicating your employment status
  • Visa fee (US $35)
  • A self addressed stamped express mail envelope (to return your passport to you)

Your passport must be valid for at least 6 months from the time you will enter Indonesia. Those requesting a tourist visa will be required to send along a copy of a recent bank statement.

Below is a link with contact information for Indonesian Embassies/Consulates in the United States from the Indonesian Consulate in Chicago. As requirements periodically change we recommend you contact the Consulate you will be sending your passport to directly.

If time constraints prevent you from obtaining a visa prior to your departure there are Indonesian consulates in Singapore, Kuala Lumpur and Kuching (a city in the Malaysian part of the island of Borneo). You will still need an official letter of sponsorship and it may take several days to process your application. Currently, the Indonesian consulate in Kuching is only processing visas for residents of Malaysia.
